OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Goal of the occupational therapy is to achieve a maximum of independence in all activities of daily living, i.e. hygiene, dressing, cooking, eating. Initially the individual daily routine of the patient is practised in his room.
Later on during the stay special housekeeping and kitchen practises are added to the treatment schedule to simulate the home conditions of the patient. When independence in activities of daily living cannot be reached, compensation techniques will be trained.
These compensationary techniques are based on the individual abilities and will, if necessary, be supported by adaption of splints, walking aids, wheel chairs and other technical
aids. Another goal of the occupational therapy is the initiation of physiological movements. This helps to normalize the muscular tonus and also has the purpose to build up physiologic movements patterns and improve sensibility, power and mobility. Therapeutic techniques, developed by
Bobath, Perfetti, Afolter and May are used and enhanced by handicraft exercises with wood, textiles and leather.
Furthermore disabilities of memory, concentration, alertness and attention are treated. Compensation techniques are taught to handle partial visual field losses.
PHYSIOTHERAPY
Physiotherapy is directed to the restitution of lost motoric abilities, the remittance of a disturbed equilibrium, the avoidance of pathological patterns of motion and the normalization of the muscular tonus.
In order to reach these goals the therapists use established neurophysiological treatment techniques (i.e. Bobath).
An individual treatment schedule is developed for each patient and the progress continuously assessed.
The treatments usually take
place in an individual therapy session. Group therapies for patients
with similar disabilities are also part of the treatment concept.
